The Friday Coffee – Interview with Daniel Scocco of DailyBlogTips
Hello friends, today for the second ‘Friday Coffee’ we have a great blogging expert – Daniel Scocco of DailyBlogTips. DailyBlogTips is considered as one of the most authoritative source for blogging related articles. After receiving a degree in International Economics and working for one year in a multinational company Daniel started DailyBlogTips in 2005. Within short time DailyBlogTips grew in to a top blog and was nominated under the “Best Web Development Blog” category in the 2007 Weblog Awards. According to Technorati DBT is one of the top 100 blogs in the world. In 2008 Daniel started Online Profits – a program which helped many bloggers to generate thousands of dollars from their blog.
I am a regular reader of DailyBlogTips for last 2 years. Daniel’s articles helped me a lot in shaping this blog. If you are a newbie in blogging then I would recommend you to go through the archives of DBT which will be a valuable guide for you. Also read his free ebook ‘Make Money Blogging’ which contains some solid blogging advices. I thank Daniel for finding time for this interview even though he was having a busy schedule.
Here we go.
1. You are one of the top 100 bloggers in the world so all most all of my blog readers may already know you. But for those who haven’t yet heard about you, please tell us a little about yourself.
My blog was in the Technorati Top 100 list at one point, but I wouldn’t go as far as saying I am one of the top 100 bloggers in the world
. I like to be realistic, so let’s say I am just a guy with a couple of popular blogs and websites.
I started building those blogs and sites back in 2005, and for the past 4 years I have been working full time on the Internet, with the revenues generated from those sites.
2. How did you get in to blogging? Who was your inspiration?
Back in 2005 when I got my degree in International Economics I was left with a big document that I had prepared for my thesis. I had put a lot of effort into researching and writing it out, but I was sure that apart from me only two people would end up reading it, my teacher and my father….
Instead of letting the document sit idle and gather dust, therefore, I decided to chop it off into small articles and publish them on the web.
That is when I started researching about web publishing models, and when I came across blogging. I built my first blogs with raw HTML files, and after a while I discovered WordPress and became a loyal user.
3. You have got a degree in International Economics, why did you prefer blogging than a full time job?
Straight out of university I got a “regular job” indeed. It was inside the marketing department of a multinational company. After one year there, however, I had one certainty: working for other people was not something I wanted to do.
Getting told what to do was a pain for me, and the bureaucratic environment of a large organization was terrible as well. I needed to ask permission to execute even small ideas I had.
That is why I decided to quit and work on my own projects on the Internet.
4. Many bloggers find it very difficult to bring traffic to their site, in your opinion which is the best way for traffic generation?
The cornerstone of traffic generation is publishing high quality content. In the beginning, however, publishing high quality content alone is not enough. You’ll also need to get busy promoting it and bringing an initial influx of readers to your blog.
5. Recently there are a lot of discussions going on about whether to focus on SEO or social media. What is your stand in this, SEO or social media?
If you want to have a popular website you need to understand the basics of SEO. That is, how search engines work, how users find information on those search engines, what are the basic ranking factors and so on.
Social media is another important marketing channel these days, but most of the times it’s harder to see the ROI there, so I would spend my time there carefully.
6. In your opinion what is the single best way to monetize a blog?
It depends. Some blogs will do better with Google AdSense, while others will do really well with affiliate marketing deals. The key to finding the most effective way is testing, testing and some more testing.
7. Any recommended blogs or resources for bloggers looking to bring their blog to next level?
* Pro Blogger
* Copy Blogger
* Entrepreneurs Journey
* Quicksprout
8. What motivated you for the creation of OnlineProfits camp?
The initial idea was to create an info product. I was not sure about the format, but I knew that there was demand for a product that would cover all the aspects of online marketing.
You have many online marketing related products available, but most of them focus on one specific aspect or niche. For instance, you have products about SEO, email marketing, blogging, link building and the like. But I couldn’t find one product that would cover all those topics in a logical and structured fashion, so I decided to create it.
9. Do you have any big announcements or future projects which you‘d like to tell us?
One of my latest projects is a website called HowToMakeAWebsite.net. As the name suggests, it’s a tutorial for people with no technical skills who want to create their first website. It’s a complete step by step guide, and someone following it would have a website up and running in a matter of hours. The feedback so far has been pretty good.
10. How can others get in touch with you?
The best way is to use the contact form on my website. But I am on Twitter, Facebook and on other social networks, usually with the id “danielscocco”.
Thanks for your time Daniel, you were busy with your projects but still found time for this interview.
I hope that everybody had great time reading this interview. There are more expert interviews coming soon in Friday Coffee series so make sure to subscribe to our RSS feed to stay alerted.
